How to Restore the Windows Registry

If something went wrong while modifying the registry, Windows will not work properly due to registry corruption. You can easily restore Windows registry settings to a previous working state with the backup you made earlier.

Restoring the registry files is a very simple task. First close if any application is running, then just open the location where you saved the backup and double click on it.

How to Restore the Registry in Windows

You will be happy to know that restoring the back up is very simple if you backed up the registry in Windows – either a specific key, maybe an entire hive, or also the whole registry itself.
You might be having problems after you changed a registry key or value , or the last time you edited the Windows registry didn't fix the problem you were trying to fix. In any case, you have been proactive and secured the registry in case something happened.

It takes usually few minutes to restoring previously backed up registry data in Windows.

  1. Find out the backup file that you have made before any changes to Windows Registry that you now want to reverse.

  2. Double tap or double click the REG file to open this.

  3. Select Yes, The text can be differ among operating systems.

  4. Assuming that the import of the registry keys was successful, you should receive a message similar to one of the following, where you can select OK:

The keys and values contained in [registry file] were successfully added to the registry.

The information in [REG file] was successfully entered into the registry.

Point: The backed up REG file remains on your computer until you delete it. Just because the file is still there after the import doesn't necessarily mean the restore didn't work. Feel free to delete this file if you no longer need it.

  5. Reboot your computer.

Depending on the changes you made to reset registry keys, you may need to restart Windows to see them take effect, or they may be associated with which program keys and values were reset .

Alternative Method to Restore the Registry

  1. Open the registry editor. Select Yes for all User Account Control warnings.

  2. Go to File > Import.

  3. Find the .reg file you want to restore in the registry, and then select Open.

Through a Restore Point

Of course, if you backed up your files using the recovery point method, this is the different method of recovery process, Here's how you can get started:
  1. Go to the Start menu.

  2. Type a 'create a restore point' and choose the right match.

  3. In search results, click on create a restore point.

  4. Then click on System Restore.
The System Restore dialog box opens. Select the restore point and click Next to continue the restore process. Click Yes when you are sure about the restore.
