What is the Difference Between 32-Bit and 64-Bit?

On computers, the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit is processing power. Computers with 64-bit processors are newer, faster, and more secure, while computers with 32-bit processors are slower and less secure.

What are Bits in Computer ?

Bit is the smallest unit of computer memory, when four bits are combined it is called a nibble, that is, 1 nibble = 4 bits byte (byte) and a group of 8 bits is called a byte. Both bits (32-bit and 64-bit) refer to the type of operating system, CPU, controller, software program, etc. that uses that particular architecture. A 32-bit computer processor can process 32-bit data at a time, and a 64-bit processor can process twice as much data at a time as a 64-bit data processor.

Now one more thing, the processor needs RAM to process this data. You can use up to 4 GB of RAM on a 32-bit computer, while a 64-bit processor needs more RAM to process data.

What is the Difference Between 32-Bit & 64-Bit?

  • First it started with the processor. There are different bit processors of a computer, e.g. 64 Bit Processor or 32 Bit Processor.

  • Next comes the operating system. Like Windows 7/10, which will be 64 or 32 bit.

  • And finally there is the software. The software you install on your operating system or Windows is available in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions.

So here are three things. The first processor is 32 bit or 64 bit, the second operating system is 32 bit or 64 bit, and the third is the 32 bit or 64 bit software that we have installed on our computer.

64-bit versions of Windows have two folders:

  • 32-bit location: C:\Program Files (x86)\

  • 64-bit location: C:\Program Files\

32-bit version of Windows have one folder:

  • 32-bit location: C:\Program Files\

How Bit Works?

In a way, the value of a bit is the square of 2. That is, if we need to extract the value of a bit. So take the square of the number of that bit as 2 and do you know how much value can be put into that bit?

For example, if I want to know the capacity to hold a value of 8 bits, then I will take the square of 28, which is 256. This will be the ability to hold 8 bits of value.

Below is the description of the ability to hold values from 1 bit to 32 bits.

The value which is here is in Byte. If you see the value of 32, then it is 4294967296 byte which is a bit difficult to remember, so to shorten it convert it from Byte to KB (Kilo Byte), then to MB (Mega Byte), then to GB (Giga Byte).

If we convert the 32 bit value holding capacity to the smallest number then it will convert to GB which is 4 GB. That is, in 32 bits, the computer can remember only 4 GB of data.

This simply means that we can use only 4 GB of RAM in a computer with 32 bit processor.

And the same formula goes for 64 bits.

How Can We Know How Much is the Bit in Our Computer?

If your computer has Windows XP or 7 installed, you need to right click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop and then select "Properties". Now you will find out how many bits of the operating system are in your computer in the system type.

If you have Windows 8, 10 or 11 on your computer, then you have to right click on the This PC icon in the Desktop and then select Properties. Now you will get to know how many bits of Operating System is in your computer in System Type.
