What is Gmail IMAP Setting- How to Configure?

Set up your Gmail account in another email client to have all your emails in one place if you want to receive Gmail through a separate email client. You must provide IMAP settings so that the email client knows how to retrieve your Gmail messages.

What is Gmail IMAP?

An Internet protocol called IMAP allows email clients to communicate with an email service like Gmail. The old protocol called POP3 and now IMAP is a replacement for this protocol (POP3).

IMAP has many advantages, e.g. the ability to keep email status in sync, access multiple mailboxes on a server, and enable server-side content searching. You can read your Gmail on different devices and messages and folders are synced in real time.

Important note: IMAP access must be enabled in Gmail online for Gmail IMAP settings to work in your email client.

How Can I Enable IMAP in Gmail?

Enable IMAP in Gmail to access Gmail account using IMAP protocol in email program or mobile device.

  1. In a web browser, open Gmail.

  2. Select the settings icon in the upper right corner.

  3. Select See all settings.

  4. Now select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

  5. Select Enable IMAP in the IMAP Access section.

  6. Now select Save changes.

What are Gmail's IMAP Settings?

Gmail IMAP settings for incoming emails -

Enter the following settings to receive messages from other devices.

  • Server address: imap.gmail.com

  • Username: Your full Gmail address (for example, example@gmail.com)

  • Password - Your Gmail password

  • Port – 993

  • TLS/SSL required – Yes

Gmail SMTP Settings for Outgoing Mail -

You will also need to SMTP settings to access Gmail with another mail client.

  • Server address – smtp.gmail.com

  • Username – Your full Gmail address (for ex, example@gmail.com)

  • Password – Your Gmail password

  • Port (TLS) – 587

  • Port (SSL) – 465

  • TLS/SSL required – Yes

Either TLS or SSL can be used. That depends on your email client. Check the documentation for your email client to determine which one is appropriate.

Fix the Problem

If you're having trouble setting up Gmail with an email client, consider these potential issues:

  • The server information is misspelled.

  • The username or password was entered incorrectly.

  • The email client is not secure and does not support the latest Google security standards.

  • Two-factor authentication is enabled on your Google account, so you need to generate an app-specific password.

  • In Gmail settings IMAP is not enabled.

Gmail and Email Clients Unsecure

By default, Gmail requires email clients that connect to its servers to meet certain security standards. Gmail may not allow an outdated email client to connect without first changing your account settings.

If you're using a business Gmail account, you can't change your security settings.

For more information, contact your IT department or network administrator.

You should update a secure email client instead of allowing non-secure clients to connect.
