How to Use Gmail on a Mac ?

The most popular email product in the world is Gmail. You can use software through a browser or through the native Mail app on a Mac. Another option is to bring the look and feel of web-based Gmail to the desktop through a third-party app solution.

This information applies only to Macs running macOS Big Sur (11) through Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10).

Here’s how to access Gmail configured with IMAP on a Mac by adding your account to the Mail app.

  1. In your Mac, open the Mail and in the Mail menu, click Add account.


  2. Select Google & click Continue under the Select Email Account Provider screen.


  3.  Choose Open Browser to allow Google to complete the authentication.


  4.  Now sign in your Gmail email address & click Next.


  5. You will then have to Enter your password & click Next.


  6. Enter the code you receive if you use two-factor authentication & select Next again.

  7. Choose Allow for permissions.


  8. Then you can also sync notes, calendars & contacts in additions to your Gmail account.


  9. The address you added will now appear in the mailbox section of the Mail sidebar.

Note - If you have the account set up on Mac & Gmail still is not working and you've enabled IMAP access, you may need to change your email server settings in Mail. IMAP server settings are required to use IMAP with Gmail. For using Gmail over POP, You should have enable POP through your Gmail account. In this case, you may also need to enter the Gmail POP server settings in Mail.

Different Ways to Access Gmail

Not just Gmail on Mac, but you can also use free email clients for Mac to download and send emails from your Gmail account. The setup instructions for those email clients are not the same as the steps above for those email client. The IMAP and POP server information is the same.
