What is an MHT File?
This article describes what an MHT file is and how the format differs from HTML. We'll also see how to open one on your computer and convert it to a more recognizable format like HTML or PDF.
What is an MHT File?
A file with the .MHT file extension is an MHTML Web Archive file that can contain HTML files, images, animations, audio, and other media content. Unlike HTML files, they are not limited to just text content.
These files are often used as a convenient way to archive a web page because all of the content on the page can be assembled into a single file, unlike viewing an HTML web page that only contains links to images and other content found in other places.
Note: MHTML is an acronym for "Aggregated HTML Document MIME Encapsulation." But MHT is shorthand for a number of other terms not related to HTML documents, including Merkle Hash Tree and Medium and High Technology.
How to Open MHT Files
Probably the easiest way to open MHT files is to use a web browser like Chrome, Opera, Edge, or Internet Explorer. You can also see one in Microsoft Word and WPS Writer.
HTML editors like WizHtmlEditor and BlockNote also support formatting.
A text editor can also open it, but since the file may also contain non-text elements (such as images), you won't be able to see these objects in the text editor.
Tip: Files that end with the .MHTML file extension are also web archive files and are interchangeable with EML files. This means that an email file can be renamed to a web archive file and opened in a browser, and the web archive file can be renamed to an email file to be viewed in an email client.
How to Convert an MHT File
Some document conversion tools, such as Doxillion or AVS Document Converter, can convert from the MHT format to another format, such as PDF or an image format.
Turgs MHT Wizard can save to PST, MSG, EML/EMLX, PDF, MBOX, HTML, XPS, RTF and DOC. It's also an easy way to extract non-text files from the page (such as all images) to a folder. Remember that this converter is not free, so the trial version is limited.
Another is MHTML Converter, which saves MHT files to HTML.
More Information About the MHT Format
MHT files are very similar to HTML files. The difference is that the latter only contains the text content of the page. The images that appear in an HTML file are really just links to local or online images that are then loaded when the file is uploaded.
MHT files are different in that they actually contain the image files (and others, such as audio files) in a single file, so even if the local or online images are deleted, the MHT file will still be deleted. using to view the page and its other files can . That's why they're so useful for archiving pages: files are stored offline and in an easily accessible archive, regardless of whether they still exist online.
All relative links pointing to external files are reassigned to point to the contents of the MHT file. You don't have to do this manually as it is done during the build process.
Microsoft OneNote is an example of a program that can export to this format. You can also save web pages to MHT in Internet Explorer 11 and probably other browsers as well.
The MHTML format is not a standard. While a web browser can save and display the file without issue, it's possible that opening the same file in a different browser might make it look slightly different.
Support for this format is not available by default in all web browsers. Some browsers do not support this.
Note: Microsoft no longer supports Internet Explorer and recommends upgrading to the newer Edge browser.
Still Can't Open It?
If your file doesn't open with the suggestions above, you may not be dealing with an MHT file at all. Check if you are reading the file extension correctly; it should say .mht.
If not, it could be something very similar instead. Unfortunately, just because the letters look similar doesn't mean the file formats are the same or related in any way. MHT files are Derive Math files used by the Texas Instruments Derive system and cannot be opened or converted in the same way as MHT files.
NTH is also similar but used instead for Nokia Series 40 theme files opened with Nokia Series 40 Theme Studio.
Another file extension that looks like this is MHP, which is for Maths Helper Plus files used with Maths Helper Plus from Teacher's Choice Software.
