Here, in this guide, we’ll discuss about how to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Yahoo Mail account on your desktop computer.

How to Protect Yahoo Mail Account with 2-Step Authentication ?

To protect against suspicious login attempts, Add a second level of authentication:

  1. Log into your Yahoo account & select Account Information.


  2. Click on the Account security option, which is located just below Personal information.


  3. Choose the link that says Turn on 2SV, then log back into your account when prompted.


  4. In the popup that appears, click Get Started.


  5. Now choose the method you want to use for authentication.

  6. If you have to choose Mobile number, enter a phone number at the prompt. If you have chosen the Authenticator App, follow the steps on the screen to scan the QR code with your Authenticator App. Or if you choose Security Keys, follow the prompts to enter the required information.

    [Please omit non-numeric characters when entering your cell phone number. For ex – enter 1234564321 instead of 123-456-4321 or (123)456-4321].

  7. Now enter the code in the dialog that appears on the screen after choosing the contact method, it depends on what method you choose, an SMS or a Call.  Now select Verify.

What is Two-Step Authentication ?

Two-step authentication, also known as two-factor authentication (2FA), is a security system that requires two distinct forms of identification in order to access to an app or program.

For ex- Your bank's website may require more than one username and password; you may also be asked to identify an image you have previously chosen to prove that you are who you say you are.

On the other hand, some websites like Yahoo require authentication on a separate device, e.g. your phone. It is for your extra protection.

Is Your Email Secure With Yahoo ?

When someone signs in to an account, Yahoo Mail service checks the password; It also examines the location and computer from which the attempt is made. If one looks suspicious (like signing in from a device you've never used before), Yahoo may ask for more than the password, but only if two-factor verification is enabled.

If two-factor verification is enabled, you will need to enter your password and a code that will be sent to your mobile phone.
