How to Enable Gmail Two-Factor Authentication ?

Why Use Gmail Two-Factor Authentication?

Email account contains an important data. It can be the account you use for everything from your online banking to your social media accounts & maybe even work-related issues.

2-FA requires you to have access to a physical device like your smartphone, as well as your virtual password, which makes it much more difficult for anyone to access your email account.

How Gmail’s Two-Factor Authentication Works ?

By requiring your password, Gmail’s 2-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security & a special security key to access your Gmail account. Google will usually send you a unique verification code for your account via voice call, text message or through the Google Authenticator app. It’s very secure that each code can only be used once & expires in minutes.

How to Turn-On Two-Factor Authentication for Gmail ?

It is very easy to setup Gmail 2-factor authentication.

  1. Go to your Gmail account and select your profile picture.


  2. Choose Manage Your Google Account.


  3. In the left pane, select Security.


  4. Choose 2-Step Verification.


  5. Click Get Started.


  6. After enter your password, select Next.


  7. Then enter your mobile number, you will receive a code by SMS or phone call and then select Next.


  8.  Now enter verification code & click Next.


  9. To enable Gmail 2FA, click Turn On.

How to Turn-Off Two-Factor Authentication for Gmail ?

Actually we don’t recommend turning off Gmail’s 2-step verification, but if you do, here are the instructions:

  1. Go to your Gmail account & click your profile picture or icon.

  2. Choose Manage Your Google Account.

  3. In the left pane, select Security.

  4. Scroll down to 2-Step Verification and sign in when prompted. Respond to the two-step verification method you've enabled.

  5. Choose Turn  Off.


  6. If you really want to turn off 2FA then select Turn Off when Google will display a warning message asking you to confirm it.

How to Set Up Alternate Verification Steps for Your Gmail Account ?

There are a couple ways to verify other than a text or voice call. This is how to change the second form of verification.

  1. Login to your Gmail account & click your profile icon.

  2. Choose Manage Your Google Account.

  3. Select Security.

  4. Select 2-Step Verification.

  5. Click on Add more second steps to verify your identity.


  6. Select from backup codes, a Google prompt, the Google Authenticator app, & more. Choose an option to configure it.
