How to Create App-Specific Passwords in Gmail ?

When you try to sign in to your Google Account using 2 step-verification and get an ‘Incorrect Password’ error, an app password might solve the problem.

An app password is a 16-digit passcode that gives an app or device limited access to your Google account without revealing your personal password and full access to your Google account.

In this article you will see how to generate app passwords in Gmail for your connected email clients like MS Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird & others.

How to Create an App-Specific Password for Gmail ?

Before setting up an application password, you must have 2-step Verification enabled:

  1. Select Manage Google Account from your profile icon in the upper right corner of Gmail.

  2. Choose Security on the left sidebar.

  3. Choose App passwords in the Signing in to Google section. Then you will be prompted to confirm your Gmail credentials.

[You need to turn on two-step Verification for Gmail first, if you do not see App Passwords as an option.]

  4. In the Select an app, select Mail or Other (custom name), then choose a device.

  5. Click Generate.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process where your password appears in a new window, then click Done.

[Type or copy/paste the password into the email program immediately because you will not see the password again.]

How to Manage App-Specific Passwords ?

If you have to need to create a new app-specific password for a program or service, return to the App Password screen to remove the old password that you previously set but no longer use for the same app.

The value of this password is that you can regenerate a password for each service instead of changing your account’s master password. This is a good practice to use an application-specific password for only one service. If you like, you can generate as many app-specific passwords.
