A Guide to Displaying Full Email Headers in Gmail

Email messages contain essential information in the header: sender, recipient, subject, and tracking information. These latter data points can be used, for example, to troubleshoot email problems or to trace a spam message back to its probable source. Gmail supports full per-message header inspection when accessed from your desktop with a supported web browser.

How to Display Full Email Headers in Gmail

To see the full email headers of a message in Gmail:

  1. Open the email message in Gmail, and then select the More menu for additional options.

  2. Choose Show Original from the menu.

  3. Gmail will open a new tab showing the full message.

In the initial view of the message, Gmail offers two links: one to download the email as an .EML file (a plain text format that can be read by many email programs), and one to copy the message to the clipboard.

In both cases, the actual message content displayed in the lower pane is truncated or downloaded. The summary information at the top of the window is repeated, making the information easy to read within the source headers.

Email Header Content

Email headers contain a significant amount of information, such as digital postmarks, that indicate how the message got from sender to recipient. When reporting inappropriate messages to authorities, include the full content of the header. It's not uncommon for some header blocks to be over 100 lines long and full of strings that look like gibberish.
