A file with the .PST file extension is an Outlook Personal Information Store file that stores personal information used in Microsoft Outlook and/or Microsoft Exchange. You can make the file smaller with Oversized PST Recovery Tool (also called PST2GB). It will truncate anything larger than 2GB and create a new PST file of the correct size. Note: Outlook Offline Folders (.OST) files are similar to PSTs, except they support larger file sizes and are used as a cache for Outlook's Cached Exchange Mode feature. How to Open PST Files PST files are most often opened in an email program that can...

What is Software ?

Software, in general terms, is a set of instructions (commonly known as "code") placed between you and the hardware of the device, which allows you to use it. What is a Computer Software? But what really is computer software? It is an invisible component of a computer system that allows it to interact with the physical components of the computer. The software allows you to communicate with smartphones, tablets, game boxes, media players, and similar devices. It is important to note that there is a clear difference between hardware and software. Software is an intangible resource. You can't hold it in your hands. Hardware consists of physical resources such as mice, keyboards, USB ports, CPUs, memory, and printers. Phones are hardware. iPads, Kindles, and Fire TV Sticks are hardware. Hardware and software work together to make a system work. Software Types While all software is software, everyday use of software is likely to come in two forms: as system software and as an ...

What is Email or Electronic Mail ?

Image
Electronic mail, commonly known as email, is a digital message between two or more people. What is a Virtual Machine ?

Image
A virtual machine uses computer software and hardware to emulate additional computers on a physical device. Learn more about what a virtual machine is and what it can do in a VM environment. What is a Virtual Machine? Virtual machines emulate a separate operating system (the guest) and a computer from your existing operating system (the host), for example, to run Unbuntu Linux on Windows 10. The virtual machine environment appears in a separate window, and therefore it is usually isolated as a separate environment. Still, interactivity between the guest and the host is often allowed for tasks like file transfers. Everyday Reasons to Use a Virtual Machine Developers use virtual machine software to build and test software on different platforms without using a second device. You can use a VM environment to access applications that are part of a different operating system than the one installed on your computer. For example, virtual machines allow you to play game exclusive to Window...

A Brief History of Microsoft Windows

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will be the final named version of Windows. Future updates will come, but they will still carry the Windows 10 label. This means that Windows 10 can legitimately be called the latest version of Windows. From its initial release in 1985 to its continued active development in 2021 and beyond, Windows has been a major player in the consumer and business PC ecosystem. 01 - Windows 1.0 Released: November 20, 1985 Replaces: MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System), although Windows up until Windows 95 actually ran on top of MS-DOS rather than completely replacing it. Instead, you can point the mouse at a box, a window, and click. Bill Gates, then a young CEO, said of Windows, "It's unique software designed for the serious PC user." Two years passed from the announcement to the final delive...

Operating System (OS) Definition and Examples

Image
An operating system is a powerful and usually large program that controls and manages the hardware and other software on a computer. All computers and computer-like devices require operating systems, including laptops, tablets, desktops, smartphones, smart watches, and routers. Examples of Operating Systems All operating systems run on laptops, tablets, and desktop computers. You have probably heard of most of them. Some examples include versions of Microsoft Windows (such as Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP), Apple's macOS (formerly OS X), Chrome OS, and various Unix and Linux distribution lists. (Unix and Linux are open source operating systems.) Your smartphone runs a mobile operating system, probably Apple's iOS or Google's Android. Both are familiar names, but you may not have realized that these are the operating systems running on these devices. Servers, such as those that host the websites you visit or provide the videos yo...

The Windows Server line of operating systems also primarily use NTFS. It is also compatible with other operating systems such as Linux and BSD. macOS provides read-only support for NTFS. Note: NTFS stands for other terms as well, but none of them have anything to do with what is being discussed on this page. These include not trusted for servers, never tested file system, new  tools for  storage, and no time for social. How to See If a Drive is Formatted as NTFS There are several ways to check if a hard drive is formatted with NTFS or uses a different file system. Use Disk Management The first and probably the easiest way to view the status of...
